• Computer room conditions should be configured for optimal system performance. (UPS systems, HVAC systems)
• Installation of hardware redundancy on servers storing critical data must be in place. (Hard drives, power supplies, NICs)
• Optimal tape back-ups of critical data. In evaluating back-up of servers, all of the following should be considered:
  • Does your company always use the "verify" option to ensure your backups are working?
  • What is the tape rotation strategy (daily, weekly, or monthly)?
  • Does your company store tapes on site or off-site?
  • Has your company attempted to restore data from a back-up tape?
  • Are telephone systems and voice mail programming information backed up?
  • Is redundant Internet or means of conducting business in the event of a telecommunications or Internet outage in place? (i.e. backup of service providers or multiple T1 lines, etc.)
  • Are back-ups fully automated for unattended operation? If manual, does your firm have a bulletproof process and follow written procedures?
  • Has your company selected a scalable backward and forward compatible solution (hardware and software) that supports data growth?
